Progress and change are always on the move. Established norms fade away, commoditized technologies are making way into mainstream; similarly established shop-floor and bench-top tools get to desktops and handbags. In spite of components increasing in performances and dropping in price, three-dimensional laser scanning continues to be hard to own and use by professionals and organizations, in large numbers. Close-range laser scanning requires high-speed spatial data collection and fast non-contact measurements, driven in part by increasingly complex manufacturing environment.?

Increasing in demand and nowhere near of peaking-out, three-dimensional input brought opportunity and complacency at the same time; many self-proclaimed leaders pitched fixes as innovations while software vendors, pushing one-fit-all models motivated designers to follow beaten paths. Evolutionary improvements are scarce and 3-D capture is perceived difficult and costly. Most of existing non-contact scanning products remain entirely dependent on third-party software just to achieve minimal functionality, adding up to ownership costs, and pressure on investment return. Not surprisingly, operations such as verification and reverse engineering are performed mostly by well-staffed groups. Technical dependencies continue to keep users close to bench tops, shop-floors and dedicated stations; portability is not easy. As rapid-prototyping technologies are finding their way to desktops, 3-D input devices are becoming increasingly needed. Desktop and mobility are a must; color, ease of use, and affordability must follow suit. Products should be to deliver meaningful outputs from natively and readily.?

CLS sensors are the first color 3-D laser sensors, with color-per-vertex performance and vision-based framing and navigation, in hand-held mode. Color-per-vertex performance refers to obtaining spatial samples and their color information simultaneously. Vision-based framing or video anchoring allows trackers, such as digitizing arms, to re-base when necessary, in non-contact way, utilizing software recognition of dedicated alignment marks. This feature allows virtually limitless workspace, and permits automated model creation in unique frames. Live video display find use in navigating about objects, 3-D probing and visual feedback, making operations attractive and entertaining. Controls are highly visual, results are compelling and real-time.?
